While I'm thinking of Google, I want to share CustomizeGoogle, a delightful little Firefox plug-in that does just what I want it to do with Google. It removes the ads and sponsored links from the search results page. It also adds links at the top of the search results page that let you repeat your search in Yahoo, Ask, Technorati, and a number of other web search tools; number the search results; remove click tracking, and several other cool things. It's reasonably easy to customize, and I now find searching "native" Google really annoying. This is yet another reason why I've switched to the Firefox browser and why I'll never switch back to IE.
Hi Mary,
I hope you don't mind me adding a comment here, I would have sent an email but couldn't find any contact info. I've written a Firefox extension I thought you might like since you're a fan of CustomizeGoogle, it's at http://petesearch.com/
It's aimed at researchers like me who have to do a lot of obscure searches. It checks for dead links, makes sure the pages contain the terms you searched for, gives a split-screen preview with the terms highlighted, and adds hot-keys to move through the results quickly. It works with Google, Technorati, Ask, Live and Exalead.
I hope you get a chance to try it out, I'd be interested to hear if you find it helpful.
thanks,
Pete
