Molly Ivins passed away today, at age 62, from breast cancer. It's a sad day for every bleeding-heart liberal and anyone who enjoys reading really sharp wit. She wrote her last column just a couple of weeks ago, about the escalation of troops in Iraq. I miss her voice already. A tribute to her and a compilation of her columns is here.
Her last column ended:
We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we're for them and trying to get them out of there. Hit the streets to protest Bush's proposed surge. If you can, go to the peace march in Washington on Jan. 27. We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, "Stop it, now!"
Ms. Ivins has hopefully passed on to the ultimate ground of reality, where fact reigns supreme over adolescent emotionalism, half-truths and intellectual prejudice.
It will all no doubt seem quite strange to her at first, but she'll get used to it. Bless you, Ms. Ivins; you never failed to give us a laugh (even if it was sometimes followed by a shudder).

Ms. Ivins, rest her soul, was the penultimate example of a immature college student, in the guise of a syndicated columnist, who never grew up or matured enough to understand the United States' true position in the world- as the primary source of light in the world that confronts evil and tyranny in the world on a daily basis.
Ms. Ivins, unfortunately, carried her self-righteous 60's-era mentality to her end, without bothering to mature as a writer or in her outlook on life.
Any writer can employ sarcasm and satire within their columns to skewer those in positions of power. The problem with Ms. Ivins is that she never made a good faith effort to combine her sardonic satire with facts and truth. Ms. Ivins only had half of the equation right. RIP.
